Chapter One

Bella’s POV

Moving back to Forks with my dad had been one of the best decisions of my life. As I stood on the stairs, watching Billy Black pull into the driveway in a rusted orange truck, I knew that senior year was going to be a good one.

“Well, what do you think, Bells?” Charlie asked from beside me.

“Seriously?” I asked, grinning like an idiot.

“Yep. Billy’s son, Jake, fixed it up for you. Figured it’d be better than me giving you rides around in the cruiser,” Charlie shrugged.

“This is awesome!” I cried, running down the steps to check out my new truck.

Charlie moved to help Billy get out and into his wheelchair while I began inspecting every aspect of the truck.

“Jake says if the old girl ever gives you a hard time to bring it down to La Push. He’d have come with me, but he had some tribal business to take care of. He was really disappointed,” Billy explained.

“I’ll have to come by and thank him personally, then,” I decided, still ecstatic.

“I think he’d like that, Bella,” Billy grinned.

“Then you tell him to expect me next weekend,” I said.

“Will do,” Billy chuckled.

“Would you like to stay for dinner, Billy? I’ve made more than enough for me and Charlie,” I offered.

I saw my dad grin widely at me behind Billy and knew he appreciated my suggestion.

“You should take her up on the offer, old man. Her cooking’s a hell of a lot better than anything you could whip up,” Charlie recommended.

“Eh, who you call old man, old timer? If I remember correctly, you’re turning forty this year,” Billy huffed.

“You aren’t too far behind me,” Charlie reminded him.

“Why don’t the two of you continue this discussion inside? I made apple pecan pie for desert,” I said convincingly.

“You twisted my arm. Bump me up the steps, Chief,” Billy grunted, shooting me a wink.

I returned it with a smile, leading the two bickering ninnies into the house for dinner. The entire meal passed in a similar manner with the two of them trying to outdo the other in embarrassing stories. By the time desert had been eaten, I knew more things about my father and Billy than any teenage girl would ever care to know.

“Who’s taking you home, Billy?” I asked as I was picking up dinner.

“One of the boys from the reservation is coming to get me,” Billy assured me.

“We could’ve taken you back, Billy,” Charlie frowned, grabbing two beers out of the fridge.

“He had to come this way anyway. He’s working on a construction site in Forks,” Billy explained.

“He works this late?” I asked, glancing at the clock that read seven.

“He works when he can and as often as he can,” Billy shrugged.

“Well, you take some of these leftovers for him. Jake will just had to share,” I insisted, splitting the leftovers into two containers.

“I’m sure they’ll both appreciate it, Bella. Thank you,” Billy smiled.

“Come on, Billy. Let’s see how the Cardinals do against those Bills,” Charlie entreated, slapping Billy on the back and handing him a beer.

“Two horrible teams. Not sure which one I want to lose more,” Billy sighed, shaking his head as he followed Charlie into the living room.

As I finished washing the dishes, I listened to the two of them shouting obscenities at the television and arguing with the sports announcers. I was drying and putting away the newly cleaned dishes when there was a knock on the door.

“That’ll be my ride,” Billy grunted, rolling his chair to the door.

“You bring that boy of yours next time, Billy. Haven’t gotten the chance to see him in a few weeks,” Charlie commented.

“You’d hardly recognize him, Chief. The boy’s eating me out of house and home,” Billy chuckled.

Charlie opened the door, grinning at the person on the other side.

“Hey, there, Sam. How you doing?” Charlie asked, shaking the man’s hand.

“As good as can be expected, Chief,” a husky voice answered.

I shivered at the deep tone, feeling it reverberate down my spine.

“Bells, come say goodbye to Billy,” Charlie called, poking his head in.

“Coming,” I said, throwing the towel over my shoulder.

I walked into the hallway, keeping my eyes on Billy. Leaning down, I hugged him tightly.

“Tell Jake I said hi and that I’ll be by to see him soon,” I insisted, standing up.

“Will do. Bella, this is Sam Uley, one of Jake’s friends,” Billy introduced.

Turning to face the man at the door, I felt a jolt of awareness through my body. His eyes were such a deep brown they were almost black and they held a look of awed surprise as our gazes held. I was helpless to do anything but stare at the beautiful man in front of me, soaking in every detail.

I’d only just met him, but I knew there was something incredibly special about Sam Uley.

Sam’s POV

Staring at the pale beauty before me, I couldn’t believe what had just happened. Just one look was all it had taken and I was completely, irrevocably under her spell.

Imprinting.

The world held a new meaning for me. She had definitely imprinted on my heart, my very soul. Those chocolate eyes were bottomless as they stared into my own. My heart was pounding within my chest, almost painful in it’s intensity.

A throat clearing caused the angel before me to drop my gaze, a blush coming to her cheeks. I almost groaned at the luscious pink that tinged her pale skin. Briefly, I wondered just how far that blush went.

“So, Sam. Ready to head out?” Billy asked.

I turned my attention to him, noticing the knowing look he gave me. The old man knew exactly what had just happened and I couldn’t tell if he was pleased or not. The girl was his best friend’s daughter, after all.

“Sure. Uh, it was nice to meet you Bella,” I nodded, capturing the angel’s gaze again.

“You too, Sam,” Bella smiled.

I felt my knees nearly buckle at the beauty of her smile and I knew it was hopeless. I was already a goner for her.

“Come on, son. These old bones are ready for bed,” Billy groaned, wheeling himself out the door.

“See you next weekend, Billy,” Charlie called as I bumped Billy down the steps.

“See you, Chief. Bye, Bella,” Billy waved.

I swallowed as the door closed behind us, knowing my reason for existing was on the other side.

“Easy there, Sam. Let’s get back me back to the rez. You can come back tonight,” Billy soothed, noticing my shaking.

“Sorry, Billy,” I sighed, helping him into my truck.

“No need to apologize, son. I understand,” Billy smirked.

“Jake’s gonna kill me,” I groaned.

Jake had been going on and on about Bella Swan’s return for weeks. He’d been in love with her since they were kids and I’d just ruined his chances. I knew he’d hoped he would imprint on her, but I also knew that was no longer an option.

I took a deep breath as I climbed into the driver’s seat, my hands grinding the steering wheel as I turned us towards the reservation.

“I’ll make sure that he doesn’t. Can’t have that girl in there hurting like that,” Billy assured me.

My hands tightened on the steering wheel as I thought about Bella being in any kind of pain.

“Easy, Sam. She’s fine,” Billy murmured, his tone calming me down.

“Sorry,” I mumbled, focusing on the road.

“I have a feeling this is going to be pretty hard on you, kid,” Billy frowned.

“Of course it would be. What about being a wolf has ever been easy for me?” I growled.

“Hey, now. You may be able to get away with growling at those boys in the pack, but don’t you dare growl at me, son. I can still turn you over my knee,” Billy threatened.

I grinned, remembering all the time Billy had done just that. Growing up, he and Harry Clearwater had been the only father figures I’d had. I respected them more than anyone else I’d ever met for taking me in like they had.

“Sorry, sir,” I tossed at him.

Billy just grunted, nodding as we pulled into La Push. The rest of the drive to his house was silent and I sighed when I saw Jake sitting on the front porch, waiting for us. I was not looking forward to the conversation ahead, but it needed to be done.

“I was wondering if you guys got lost,” Jake grinned, walking down the steps to help his dad.

“Nah. Just had a little surprise, is all,” Billy waved off, sliding into his chair.

“Oh, yeah?” Jake asked, raising a brow at me.

“We should probably go talk,” I suggested.

“That bad?” Jake chuckled.

I didn’t answer, not finding hurting my brother to be very funny. Jake’s expression quickly turned from humor to concern.

“I’ll be back in a few, Dad,” Jake said as Billy wheeled into the house.

“No hurry. I’m off to bed,” Billy replied over his shoulder.

“After you,” Jake insisted, motioning to the forest.

I felt like I was walking towards a funeral as I made my way into the trees by Jake’s house. In a way, I was. It was the death of Jake’s hopes of imprinting on the girl he’d loved for years.

As we stripped out of our clothes, I dreaded the moment he would realize what had happened as I stood on the Swan’s front porch. When I couldn’t put it off anymore, I phased into the black wolf, allowing my memories to come to the forefront. I winced as the russet wolf across from me whimpered and then howled angrily.

Jake’s POV

I couldn’t believe Sam had imprinted on Bella. My Bella!

When he’d told me, I’d wanted to attack him, make him feel even a portion of the pain I felt at losing her before I’d even had the chance to win her, but I could never hurt Bella that way. Even if she didn’t know Sam had imprinted on her, she would feel his pain as acutely as if she did know.

Scowling at the piece of junk sitting in my garage, I flipped the wrench around and around in my hand.

Truth be told, I was happy for Sam. He deserved to be happy after everything that had happened. I just wish it hadn’t come in the form of my Bella.

The funny thing was, though, it didn’t feel like he’d imprinted on her. Usually, when a wolf imprinted, the rest of the pack formed a brother- (or sister- in the case of Leah) like bond with the wolf’s imprint. All of the pack adored Kim and viewed her as a sister. Even little Claire had been enfolded into the ranks of pack family.

I didn’t have that kind of bond with Bella. I still felt the same love I’d always felt for her. I knew Dad would probably have a few theories about that, but I was reluctant to tell him. I didn’t want to cause problems within the pack, especially if they would cause problems for Bella.

The roaring of Dad’s old truck alerted me to the fact that the object of my thoughts had arrived. Dad had told me she would be stopping by soon, before school started. I just hadn’t expected her to come by the very next day.

I sighed, knowing it was probably the call of the imprint. She wanted to be close to Sam, subconsciously at least, and since Sam was here, this is where she wanted to be, too.

“Jake?”

Her voice sounded even better than my memories. From Sam’s memories I knew she’d done quite a bit of growing up over the past few years, filling out in all the right places. She was gorgeous and I suddenly hated Sam all the more for taking her away from me.

“Out here,” I called, twirling the wrench around.

Her footsteps drew closer and I waited with bated breath, anticipating the moment she would walk around the side of the garage. I saw her shadow and nerves suddenly took hold of me, causing me to turn into the car and begin fiddling around under the hood.

“Jake?”

Taking a deep breath to steady myself, I flipped the wrench and turned to face the woman of my dreams.

“Hey, Bells. Long time no see,” I grinned, looking at her.

Sam’s memories hadn’t done her justice as my eyes raked in every detail hungrily. Her hips were full, but not wide, just the right size for my hands to grip. And her breasts! Who knew Bella would have a rack like that? Last time I’d seen her, she’d been flat, barely an A cup. Those puppies had to be at least a D.

Finally, my eyes made contact with hers, the best feature yet. A deep chocolate brown reflected back at me, drawing me in. A lightning bolt struck my brain in that moment and all thought fled as I found myself moving towards the beautiful angel before me.

“Wow. You really grew up, huh?” Bella asked, blushing.

The wolf inside me growled in pleasure that Bella had been checking me out and found me desirable.

“Four years is a long time, Bells,” I grinned.

“I guess so. Um, Billy told me you’re the one who fixed the truck up for me,” Bella said slowly.

“I did,” I agreed.

“I, uh, just wanted to say thanks. And that I’ll… be taking you up on the, um, offer to fix her up if anything happens,” Bella stuttered.

I felt my grin widen as I slowly stalked her, loving the way her body seemed to react to mine. I hadn’t even touched her yet and I could already hear her heart trying to beat out of her chest.

“Jake? You out here, man?”

I growled, angry at the intrusion of time spent with my mate.

My eyes grew wide as I realized what I’d just thought. Bella wasn’t my mate, she was Sam’s. The thought didn’t seem to be right, though, and the more I thought it, the more wrong it seemed to become.

“Jake?”

I recognized the voice this time seeing as it was closer to the garage. Glancing over at Bella, I could tell she recognized who my visitor was, too. More than a little glad that he was here, I moved towards the door, looking around outside.

“Sam. I think we have a problem.”
